Our Energy team welcomes its newest line workers

After three intense months, Overhead Line (OHL) winter training has drawn to a close for our line workers including our latest cohort who graduated at a ceremony near the OHL Training Centre in Staffordshire.

Winter training for existing line workers takes place during the colder and darker months when project progress is slowed by harsh weather and challenging conditions. We use this opportunity to bring in our engineers, supervisors and operatives for refresher training and to familiarise them with changes to cables, equipment and processes.

It’s also when we provide full training to our newest cohort of trainees and this year saw 13 new line workers graduate – many being new to OHL

Protecting and Developing People

Every new line worker received training on the basics needed to keep them safe, such as tower climbing, safely using – and maintaining – equipment and harnesses, tying knots, using ladders, impressed voltage and safely managing rescues and emergencies, including first aid training.

They were also equipped with the tools and skills needed to construct, install and replace overhead lines, and trained to use hardware like winches, puller tensioners and the Quad Catch Block system.

The majority of the latest cohort will be assigned to existing projects including VF in Blackpool and 4VF between Hampshire and West Sussex, with some taking on other duties until we’re ready to place them with a project.

“These are exciting times as our newest trainees join our future pipeline of talent. They can look forward to so many exciting opportunities ahead of them, to learn and grow with us as we mobilise and deliver a huge amount of work servicing and building a greener and brighter future in power transmission and distribution.
