Maidenhead and Slough Stations
This project transformed two congested station gateways at Slough and Maidenhead, redesigning key entrances and integrating existing systems to keep passengers moving as Crossrail demand grew.
Project overview
The existing entrances, ticket halls and gate lines at Slough and Maidenhead did not provide sufficient space for adequate passenger flow, often causing congestion and queuing for passengers entering or exiting the platforms. With the introduction of Crossrail services along the Great Western Main Line, passenger numbers were predicted to rise, leading to further congestion and disruption.
The project outputs were to produce a revised GRIP 4 and GRIP 5–8 (Design and Build) for the redevelopment of Slough and Maidenhead stations. These outputs included new layouts for the existing Slough station southern entrance and the Platform 3 and 4 building, as well as new layouts for the existing Maidenhead northern and southern entrances.
The project team also ensured that all previous station information and security systems (SISS) upgrades and installations (CCTV, PA, CIS and PHPs) completed as part of the wider Crossrail scheme were reviewed and integrated into this scheme to provide a single system. This applied to earlier platform extensions, station buildings and urban realm areas.
The works to the Maidenhead station entrance presented the greatest challenge, requiring the construction of a completely new station entrance while maintaining continuous station access.
