Heathrow: Sierra A Taxiway Refurbishment
We delivered the full refurbishment of the Sierra A taxiway, one of the airport’s critical airside corridors and a key access route to the 27L glidepath area.
The project required precision engineering, complex stakeholder coordination, and delivery within strict seasonal and operational constraints, including Heathrow’s peak Christmas period.
Project overview
The refurbishment programme comprised extensive civil, structural, and materials engineering activities, including:
- Establishing an onsite UKAS‑accredited laboratory, conducting Specification 33 testing including compression, flexural and depth verification.
- Breaking out and replacing 28,000m³ of the Sierra A taxiway, adjacent to the 27L glidepath critical zone.
- Processing and reusing 11,000m³ of existing concrete as a Type 1 sub‑base.
- Collaborating with Transport for London to safely coordinate works above an active London Underground tunnel.
- Widening and realigning the taxiway to enable operations for Code F aircraft.
- Ensuring completion and reopening prior to Heathrow’s peak Christmas season, enabling efficient routing to and from the southern runway and supporting aircraft stacking movements.
Project Outcomes
- Delivered on time and within budget
- 333,000+ RIDDOR‑free hours worked
- Completed ahead of Heathrow’s busiest seasonal operational requirements
This site is very much at the forefront of industry best practice in respect of health and safety with a clear demonstration of the very highest levels of compliance.
