Northumberland Park Station opens on the Northumberland Line

Rail 3 min read

The Northumberland Line reached another amazing milestone on Sunday, 22 February 2026, with the official opening of Northumberland Park, the fifth station to welcome passengers on the Northumberland Line.

This milestone is a great achievement despite the challenges, which included; tough winter weather, working in close proximity to homes and limited space available.

The station is the fifth stop on the line after Seaton Delaval, and runs trains to and from Newcastle Central Station and Ashington.

Additionally, it is located adjacent to the local Nexus metro station, ensuring a seamless change for passengers from the Northumberland Line to the metro.

The station main features are:

  • Single platform
  • Lift and stair access
  • Seating and shelters
  • Ticket machines

The team’s work at this station included installing a new single platform, constructing a piling wall between the platform and neighbouring residents’ gardens, pumping 3,000 tonnes of grouting to fill voids and stabilise the ground, and building a new lift and stair access to the platform.

As well as step-free access and seating, the station also has audio frequency induction loops for passengers who use hearing aids. It also features on ticket machines, and shelters on the platform for waiting passengers. All of which has now made the station fully accessible.

Olivia Perkins, Managing Director – Rail said:

Completing five stations out of six is another proud moment for everyone involved. Construction of this station had specific challenges considering the proximity to peoples’ homes, the limited space available for construction logistics and risks associated with past mining activities. Our teams and the supply chain working with us navigated these challenges successfully and we are incredibly grateful for the patience and support given by the local community and other stakeholders. We are pleased to open this station bringing another transport link and associated benefits to the area.

About the project

The line restores passenger services after 60 years.

Passenger trains returned to the Ashington–Newcastle corridor in December 2024, ending a six decade gap since services were withdrawn in 1964 as part of the Beeching cuts.  This reopening is widely seen as a major regional transport milestone, reconnecting key communities such as Ashington, Bedlington and Blyth. It delivers major economic and connectivity benefits

The Northumberland Line significantly cuts journey times from for example, Ashington to Newcastle now takes about 35 minutes, roughly half the previous bus time.
The line also supports sustainable transport objectives by encouraging a modal shift from road to rail.

Northumberland Park is part of the larger Northumberland Line project. The project aims to improve transport links in Northumberland and the surrounding areas by providing six new stations. Morgan Sindall Infrastructure is the primary contractor on the project, and the team began work on Northumberland Park Station in 2023.

The final station in the project, Bedlington, will open next month.
