Newsham Station officially opens, transforming regional connectivity
Our Rail team is proud of the official opening of Newsham Station on Monday 17 March, which marks a significant milestone in regional transportation.
It offers a swift and convenient travel option for commuters in Northumberland. Passengers can now reach Newcastle in just 21 minutes, enhancing accessibility and reducing travel times for residents in the area.
The team has been busy adding the finishing touches to the station in time for the official opening.
As the largest station on the Northumberland Line, Newsham will serve as a vital hub for local transport. It is the third stop for trains departing from Ashington and features two platforms. Equipped with lifts, ensures seamless transfer between platforms, making travel more accessible for all passengers. A newly constructed footbridge will also allow access to the station which will be opening soon.
Residents and visitors to the area have already been using the newly constructed Newsham road bridge on the A1061, which is the busiest road into Blyth. This road bridge opened to traffic in August 2024 to support the removal of the busy level crossing. With the station being in close proximity to residential homes, the team have worked closely with the local residents to minimise disruption.

The opening of Newsham Station is part of a broader redevelopment plan that aims to revitalise rail services in the region. After being unserved by the railway for 60 years, this initiative is expected to drive economic growth, align with the Government’s Plan for Change, and offer better travel options for residents and businesses alike.
The expansion of the Northumberland Line will continue during 2025, with additional stations at Bedlington, Blyth Bebside, and Northumberland Park. These developments promise to further enhance connectivity, supporting both local communities and regional economic ambitions.
