Colindale Station opens new step-free entrance
Our Colindale rail team has reached a major milestone with the opening of its brand‑new step‑free entrance in December, marking a significant moment in the station’s upgrade programme.
The new lift now provides step‑free access from street to platform level, making the station more accessible for everyone.
The spacious new ticket hall also increases capacity, supporting the delivery of new homes in the area and helping to future proof the station for the expected rise in customer demand in the years ahead. Outside, the wider pavement offers more space and comfort for pedestrians in the community.
The new entrance features a distinctive curved ceiling clad in laminated timber. The new roof’s unique design not only creates a striking structure but also connects the station to the historical identity of Colindale by drawing inspiration from an aircraft hangar. This is a nod to the Hendon Aerodrome, which is a key landmark in terms of local history as it was used heavily during the Second World War. Above it, a sustainable blue‑and‑green roof drainage system supports wild planting, helping to manage rainwater and enhance biodiversity.
Work on the project began in January 2024, and throughout 2025 our teams and supply chain partners worked hard to deliver these improvements. Key upgrades completed over the past year include:
✅ A brand-new building serving as a gateway to the wider Colindale area
✅ A spacious ticket hall to accommodate growing passenger numbers
✅ Step-free access with a new lift and platform humps for level boarding
✅ A sustainable blue and green roof drainage system featuring wild plants
These upgrades represent a major investment in the future of Colindale. They will make journeys easier, greener, and more accessible for everyone
With the entrance now open, the team will move on to completing the final elements of the station upgrade. This includes installing an enhanced accessible customer toilet, complete with an infant changing facility (due to open in mid‑2026), as well as permanent signage across the station.
