Sellafield Product and Residue Store Retreatment Plant

Delivered through the Programme and Project Partners (PPP) framework

The Sellafield Product and Residue Store Retreatment Plant (SRP) project will provide a facility that will receive special nuclear material from existing stores on the Sellafield site and process into a form suitable for safe and secure storage until 2120.

Project overview

SRP is a project of national significance, playing a vital role in delivering the special nuclear materials strategy at Sellafield.

It addresses one of the site’s highest hazards by safely receiving special nuclear material packages from existing storage locations across the Sellafield site and re-packaging them into new 100-year packages for safe storage.

In May 2025, the new-build plant hit a major milestone when its process building became weathertight. The plant now enters a new phase to progress its internal and mechanical fit-out, pushing it closer to welcoming bespoke systems, software, and gloveboxes for active commissioning.

The timelapse (above) shows the progress being made in the delivery of this mega project, and the mixed weather conditions our teams are operating in this summer.

The facility will contain an array of glovebox systems, which are currently being manufactured and tested off-site before being installed in the coming years. Our teams are at the forefront of this, which is traditionally not seen on a decommissioning site but is essential to setting new benchmarks in how we approach complex challenges.

Delivering SRP successfully since the Programme and Project Partners (PPP) inception in 2019 has been through the dedication and collaboration of our team and the extensive supply chain network supporting the project.

This collective effort ensures the safe and timely progress of one of the most complex undertakings on the site. By working together, we demonstrate the professionalism and commitment necessary to meet stringent safety and quality standards, even in the face of significant challenges.

Our approach through the PPP delivery model has enabled us to achieve several milestones, setting new firsts for Sellafield. The project’s progress highlights the effectiveness of our collaborative model and the unwavering commitment to excellence from all involved. Keeping such a large-scale project on track while prioritising safety is no small accomplishment, and it reflects the high standards maintained across our entire team.
