Pont-Y-Felin
The Pont-Y-Felin project aims to create a 1.8-hectare wetland at Pont-Y-Felin Lane, New Inn, near Pontypool, for the local community.
It will serve as a green filtering system for stormwater that can overflow from the nearby storm overflow during heavy rain. This stormwater will pass through the wetland before being released into the Afon Lwyd. This will help improve the quality of the river and the main water body into which it flows, the River Usk.
This Water project commenced in November 2023, during one of the wettest winters, which resulted in challenging conditions to undertake construction activities comprising deep excavations. Pre-planning of the project was meticulously undertaken and adhered to, which set the foundations for delivering a fantastic project.
Our Water team has worked closely with our supply chain across all disciplines to minimise change and manage risks, striving to deliver the work safely, of the highest quality, and on time.
Project overview
This initiative aims to serve the local community while acting as a natural filtration system for stormwater overflows and supporting ecological improvements in the Afon Lwyd and, ultimately, the River Usk.
With the activity on the project making good progress, it will establish reed beds, wetlands, accessible footpaths, educational zones, and broader environmental enhancements. These features are designed to boost local biodiversity and provide a welcoming space for residents to enjoy.
Storm overflows are a necessary component of the wastewater system, helping to prevent flooding during periods of heavy rain. The green infrastructure solution at New Inn will help ensure that stormwater is filtered, removing many harmful substances, particularly phosphates that contribute to environmental degradation.
This project reflects a long-term commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. It’s a vital step toward cleaner waterways and deeper community engagement with nature-based infrastructure.
The main works include:
- The creation of reed beds and wetlands
- Constructing a small compound for managing the nearby assets
- Installing footpaths, additional pedestrian access gates and outdoor seating
- Improve the current landscaping.
- Creating spaces to enhance the local biodiversity and allowing people to take up educational opportunities to learn more about the local environment.
