Merseyrail Accessibility and Infrastructure Enhancements Framework 

Delivering accessible and sustainable rail upgrades across the Merseyrail network.

Project overview

Under the Merseyrail Building and Civils Framework, we delivered a series of station upgrades across the Liverpool area. These projects were managed using the Project Acceleration in a Controlled Environment ( PACE)  methodology. This ensured a consistent and structured approach from early design through to construction, to this final handover.  

Working closely with Merseyrail, Network Rail, and design partners, we evaluated multiple design options, prioritising buildability, cost-effectiveness, and minimal impact on surrounding communities. 

At Aigburth, the use of a Giken silent pile press helped reduce noise and vibration for nearby residents. Exemplifying our commitment to thoughtful planning and stakeholder consideration. 

To drive design efficiency, we collaborated with Merseyrail to develop a shared design catalogue that standardised key project components while allowing for station-specific adaptations. This approach ensured consistent quality while enabling ongoing improvement by incorporating lessons learned from each completed project. 

During the construction phase, the primary focus was on minimising disruption to passengers and surrounding communities, whilst ensuring that all stations remained fully operational and safe for daily use. Careful planning and phased implementation strategies were used, which allowed work to continue with minimal impact on station functionality. 

Sustainability was also a core priority of this project, with a range of eco-conscious initiatives implemented.

These included the use of:

• Battery-powered tools to reduce reliance on fossil fuels
• Pre-mixed materials to minimise on-site emissions and waste 
• Powering welfare units through existing station supply

Every project was completed with a smooth and efficient handover. This included snag-free delivery, guided site tours, and comprehensive documentation, all tailored to meet the specific standards of Merseyrail and Network Rail. The result delivered consistently high-quality infrastructure, with strong client satisfaction and meaningful benefits for the local community.
