Electrical Distribution Network Upgrade Programme
Electricity Distribution Network Upgrade Project (EDNUP) upgrades and future-proofs Sellafield’s existing electrical network to ensure safe, reliable and resilient power for critical operations; as well as providing back-up electricity generation in the event of a power outage.
Project overview
A safe, reliable electricity supply is critical for Sellafield, supporting a wide range of essential operations. From powering industrial plants and domestic facilities to enabling decommissioning activities and other vital processes. To meet the growing demands of modern operations and ensure compliance with current safety regulations, this project delivers a comprehensive upgrade to the site’s aging electrical infrastructure.
Recognising the critical importance of uninterrupted power, the project also introduces a robust backup power strategy. Rather than relying on a single backup supply, the design incorporates two independent standby power systems, significantly reducing the risk of power loss and ensuring operational continuity even in the event of electrical grid failure. In addition to strengthening the power supply, the project addresses high-voltage risks associated with specific substations, implementing safety improvements that protect both employees and infrastructure. The integration of innovative technologies further enhances system performance, contributing to greater efficiency, reliability, and security across the electrical network.

Fun fact: The total EDNUP generation output is equivalent to 125% of the electrical demand of the Isle of Man!
