Cardiff Western district pumping station resilience upgrade

Increasing the resilience of a critical sewage pumping station by upgrading the power distribution and control networks.

Project overview

The Cardiff Western District Sewage Pumping Station (WDPS) is a vital asset for Welsh Water, serving the western area of Cardiff by pumping sewage to Cog Moors Wastewater Treatment Works.

Originally built in 1978, the station faced increasing operational risks due to ageing infrastructure, including 44-year-old generators and obsolete control systems. This project addressed these issues by upgrading the power distribution and control networks, ensuring continued compliance and operational reliability.

Key improvements included replacing outdated generators, modernising the SCADA system, and collaborating with Western Power Distribution to unlock additional network capacity. These enhancements significantly reduced the risk of failure and ensured the station could meet future demands.
