Bedlington Station opens, completing the Northumberland Line Project
The final station in the Northumberland Line Project has been completed! The opening on Sunday, 29 March marked a major milestone of this long term project, with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure working on the Northumberland Line stations since 2022.
The Rail team at Bedlington Station constructed two new platforms, along with an access road, car park, and footpath. Additional improvements also included highway works and signage.
They also demolished a derelict building to facilitate access to the southbound platform – and they used this as an opportunity to work with local community organisations. They preserved the bricks from this building, and they were distributed between several local organisations, including:
- East Bedlington Parish Council, to restore the station building at Bedlington
- Hope Church in Bedlington, for a garden restoration project
- Woodhorn Narrow Gauge Railway in Ashington, to help rebuild their station
The Northumberland Line Project involved the construction of six stations over 18 miles of track. Stations on this line were originally closed in 1963, but now passengers can travel between Ashington and Newcastle Central Station again. The full journey from Newcastle Central to Ashington will take around 35 minutes.
Olivia Perkins, managing director – Rail said:
With the sixth and final station now complete, the Northumberland Line stands as a testament to long term investment, regional collaboration, and meaningful community impact. This project has reconnected towns and people, and strengthened the foundations for future economic growth, sustainable travel, and improved access to more opportunities.
“Our team has enjoyed working alongside a number of delivery organisations to bring the Northumberland Line back into use; delivering the scheme has been a matter of personal pride for many of them who live locally. I am extremely proud of what they have achieved.
Bedlington is the final station to open on the line. The stations on the Northumberland Line are:
- Ashington (opened December 2024)
- Bedlington (opened March 2026)
- Blyth Bebside (opened October 2025)
- Newsham (opened March 2025)
- Seaton Delaval (opened December 2024)
- Northumberland Park (opened February 2026)
All stations on the line are fully accessible, with seating and shelters available for passengers.
