A brighter future for London Liverpool Street station

Rail 2 min read

A major moment of celebration has arrived at Liverpool Street station, as our Rail team successfully replaced the final GRP (glass reinforced polymer) panel above platforms 1–10.

This achievement, captured in a film showing colleagues marking the moment together, represents a huge step forward in transforming the UK’s busiest stations.

This final panel is the last of thousands installed across the station roof – covering an impressive 11,000m², equivalent to 8.8 Olympic sized swimming pools.

The old, discoloured panels had become heavily weathered and covered in lichen, limiting the amount of daylight reaching the platforms. With the new GRP panels now in place, natural light is flooding into the station, and the full effect will be revealed once all scaffolding is removed.

More work ahead…

While this milestone is worth celebrating, the team isn’t finished. Over the coming months, work will continue on several key areas:

  • Replacing the remaining broken and loose Georgian wire glass panels over the station concourse
  • Completing ongoing drainage improvements
  • Replacement of the heritage restored valance
  • Removing all mobile scaffolding decks to open up the station fully

The team will make full use of the station closures during March to push ahead with these final phases, and more updates will follow as progress continues.

For now, this milestone is a testament to the hard work, coordination, and commitment of everyone involved.

A special congratulations goes to our delivery team including our supply chain partners, Palmers and Deltaland whose expertise and dedication have been central to reaching this point.
