After more than six decades, passenger services returned to the Northumberland Line on Sunday, December 15, 2024, marking a significant milestone in the region's transportation history.
This was achieved through a combination of tireless efforts by dedicated teams who overcame challenging conditions and complex engineering obstacles, just in time for the holiday season. Ashington and Seaton Delaval train stations are now open for passenger travel.
The initial phase of service connects Ashington and Newcastle, with stops at Seaton Delaval and the existing station at Manors. In 2025, the line will expand further with the addition of four stations: Newsham, Blyth Bebside, Bedlington, and Northumberland Park. The return of passenger trains to this 18-mile line reconnects communities that have been without rail services for over 60 years, creating a new era of connectivity for the region.
The transport secretary, Heidi Alexander, and North East Mayor Kim McGuinness attended the special service to mark the return of passenger trains to the Northumberland Line. There was also a welcoming party, with local school children from Bishop’s Primary School waving flags and the Ashington Colliery Brass Band. Some of the local residents, including rail enthusiasts, proudly boarded the media train on Thursday 12 December 2024.
Olivia Perkins, managing director — Rail, said, “Words can’t describe how proud I feel about this achievement. The team has worked extremely hard to reach this historic milestone, and I’m sure they are just as proud to be part of this project. We have many more milestones to reach, but this is a massive step forward. Thank you to everyone involved.”

The northernmost point on the Northumberland Line, Ashington station has been designed with future expansion in mind.
- We have constructed a single platform on the west side of the line, situated alongside an existing car park. The car park has been expanded and features restricted people mobility spaces and Electric Vehicle (EV) charging bays.

The fourth stop on the line, Seaton Delaval station has modern accessibility and integration with the local community.
- The station has a single platform southeast of the railway line and the A192 bridge.
- A new access road from the A192, near The Hastings Arms, will provide vehicle and pedestrian access to the new station. The station will also link with local public open spaces and footpath networks, ensuring convenient access for pedestrians and cyclists.
- New lighting installations along access routes will enhance safety for all users.
The reopening of the Northumberland Line is more than just a transport upgrade; it’s a significant investment in the region's future. By reintroducing passenger rail services, the project fosters economic growth, enhances connectivity, and reduces reliance on cars, supporting environmental goals. With further station openings planned for 2025, the Northumberland Line is set to become a vital lifeline for the communities it serves.
This December, the region celebrates the restoration of an historic connection and looks forward to the opportunities it will bring.
