Job description

 

To provide professional Environment Health & Safety advice and support to a Programme/Project/OU which meets customer and stakeholder requirements to support effective delivery, whilst meeting SL, legislative and regulatory requirements.

To be an integral part of the Programme/Project/OU and to participate in any appropriate EHS forum, interfacing with stakeholders, customers and regulators as required.

(Note / Throughout this role profile EHS responsibilities, accountabilities and authorities should be read as EITHER Environmental OR Health & Safety depending on the position / profession of the role holder).

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Assess EHS risks and provide professional advice to Duty Holders in accordance with legislation and site policy & procedures. Where necessary document and produce technical reports in support of that advice.
  • Identify and respond to EHS issues and concerns, providing advice on appropriate measures and controls to protect the environment and ensure safe delivery of the Programme/Project/OU Lifetime plan.
  • Undertake inspections, observation and assurance activities to identify and highlight EHS performance gaps, determine root causes and corrective actions in order to improve EHS performance.
  • Support the Duty Holder in the investigation of EHS incidents and events, ensure corrective actions are taken, and learning opportunities identified and shared.
  • Develop and maintain a detailed knowledge of relevant EHS legislation, site arrangements and standards.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive knowledge of the particular EHS hazards and associated controls within the Programme/Project/OU.
  • Provide support to the EHS Manager and Duty Holders’ interactions with internal and external regulators (ONR, EA) and with external organisations such as WANO, RoSPA, LRQA, etc.
  • Identify, support and facilitate EHS improvements programmes within a Programme/Project/OU and the development of a positive EHS culture.
  • Support, coach, and mentor (and where appropriate assess) EHS role holders and those accountable for EHS delivery to develop EHS awareness and competence of the workforce.
  • Develop and deliver EHS training at a Programme/Project/OU level and in support delivery of site training programmes.
  • Lead by example, setting EHS standards, championing best practice and encouraging others to demonstrate appropriate EHS behaviours and promote a positive EHS culture in line with SL standards and expectations.
  • To work in compliance with the Collaborative Management Plan.

 

Additionally, for Project EHS Advisers:

  • Assist construction contractors in understanding SL EHS procedures and arrangements, and to implement those arrangements.
  • Assess construction contractor’s processes’ and systems for suitability and compliance with SL EHS policies, procedures and standards.

 

Authorities:

  • To advise and influence work practices within a Programme/Project/OU in accordance with current legislation, the SL Management System, and accepted industry good practice.
  • To provide advice and authorisations in accordance with SQEP roles (e.g. Safety Competence Scheme), seeking advice and guidance from the EHS Manager EHS Specialists where necessary.

 

Dimensions:

  • EHS advisers are normally assigned to a particular Programme/Project/OU and are mobilised between Programmes / Projects / OUs on a regular basis.
  • Role holder may hold formal SQEP roles and be formally appointed through the SL Management System process e.g. Radiation Protection Adviser, Environment Qualified Expert, Member of Corporate Radioactive Waste Adviser body.

 

Requirements

Graduate (2:1 minimum) in a relevant STEM subject or an equivalent level of qualifications and experience.

  • Member of a relevant Professional Body (e.g. IEMA, SRP, IOSH, etc.).
  • Several years’ EHS experience on an industrial site with experience of a range of hazard types.
  • Must complete the relevant aspects of the Safety/Environment Competency Scheme and associated training, in accordance with the requirements of the Safety/Environment Advisor Career Pathways and Training Programme Descriptions.
