About the Apprenticeship

Our structured Apprenticeship programme covers a variety of personal development and technical training to support your well-rounded development. Our programme blends practical exposure to enhance your discipline specific abilities whilst enhancing your individual personal development during your early career.

You’ll also be offered a professional scheme mentor, to help and support you.

We have a great group of early careers currently in the business and plenty of experienced colleagues who get involved in supporting you at every step of the way!

About the project

The Smart Motorway Programme (SMP) Alliance has been commissioned to deliver the dynamic hard

shoulder (DHS) enhancements programme, including the section of the M6 between junctions 4 and 5.

Following the release of the Transport Select Committee (TSC) response in January 2022 [1], the

Department for Transport (DfT) and National Highways have paused the DHS to all lane running (ALR)

upgrade programme until Road Investment Strategy 3 (2025-2030). Whilst the upgrade to ALR is paused,

National Highways has committed to continue to deliver enhancements as noted in the TSC response.

Therefore, a revised approach to scheme delivery, and subsequently National Highways Major Projects

project control framework (PCF) governance, is required to comply with DfT’s and National Highways’

commitments. The scheme will be delivered in the following phases:

·         Phase A: Central reserve (CR) barrier upgrade to achieve a minimum of H1 containment

·         Phase B: Enhancements to DHS verge infrastructure

·         Phase C: Further safety enhancements (in accordance with TSC response)

·         Phase D: Upgrade to ALR operation (subject to review of the smart motorway programme)

Works on site have begun on the M6 scheme for phase A and are to be followed by works for phase B.

The delivery of the scheme in phases will require stage assessment gate assessment review (SGAR) 5

for each phase.

What will you
be doing?

You will form part of the Engineering delivery team and form the interface between design and construction, taking 2D drawings and 3D models and ensuring the on-site delivery teams construct the works in accordance with the design. The Engineering team has a mixture of experienced and apprentice level staff all at various stages of their career. There is great experience within the team to learn and develop. On site activities include monitoring site activities to track progress against the programme, monitoring of sub-contractors and provide overviews of any delays. Ordering of materials for the construction works to gain an understanding of how project costs are controlled and accounts paid. Ensuring permits are in place where required and ensuring works are carried out in line with agreed method statements and risk assessments.
